In 1920 the Russian Poet Alexander Pushkin was exiled to the North Caucasus where he was inspired to write the prose poem A Prisoner the Caucasus. The Poem has since inspired generations of Russian writers, librettos, choreographers, journalists and filmmakers to make their own versions of The Prisoner of the Caucasus, informing and misinforming each new generation of their country's relationship with the North Caucasus region.
